My Body, My Heart – Streaming on ARD Mediathek and German Television

Since early August, the new documentary Mein Körper, mein Herz has been streaming on ARD Mediathek—and it will premiere on German television on September 15, 2025, at 22:45 on Das Erste.

In the film, I join other fascinating voices to share how I use breathing techniques, nose breathing, positive thinking, and visualization to help my heart and nervous system stay balanced under the stress of competition.

Through focused breathwork, I guide myself into a state of deep relaxation—conserving oxygen, staying calm, and remaining fully in control. It’s this practice that enables me to dive beyond 80 meters on a single breath.

Before I share more about the documentary below, here’s a short 30-second trailer that only shows my personal sequences from the film. It gives you a little glimpse of what the documentary feels like— from freediving moments to the breathwork practices that support me.

The Heart in Focus

Being part of this project reminded me how vital it is to care for our hearts—especially now.

In the documentary, Naomi and Joëlle Karfich share their uncertainty about their own heart health. Watching them go through detailed check-ups with Dr. Conchita Ruiz-Mohné shows how different women’s symptoms can be—and how easily they are overlooked.

The film also makes clear how every second matters in an emergency, and how essential it is for all of us to know what to do if someone suffers a heart attack.

Hearing Ferruccio Labita’s story—how he suffered a heart attack at just 38 and then found his way back into cycling—was a powerful reminder that true strength also means respecting our limits, and that lifestyle changes are absolutely essential, again and again.

And Professor Christiane Waller’s perspective was deeply eye-opening: she explains how constant emotional stress can literally break the heart.

Why Breath and Lifestyle Matter

Through these different perspectives, I see even more clearly why a regular breathing practice is so essential—and how conscious lifestyle choices can safeguard our health. Not just in freediving, but in everyday life: for more energy, greater resilience, longer health, and less reliance on medications.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death across our region:

For Switzerland, in 2023 heart disease alone accounted for 28% of all deaths SWI swissinfo.ch.

In Germany, the age-standardized prevalence of cardiovascular disease in 2019 was approximately 5,774 cases per 100,000 people Knowledge for Policy.. In Austria, the figure was higher—around 6,271 cases per 100,000 Knowledge for Policy.

These numbers are a powerful reminder: our hearts deserve attention—every single day.

I Believe in Lifestyle Change

To me, breathwork isn’t just part of training—it’s about building inner calm and resilience. Chronic stress can harm the heart, which is just one reason why I intentionally use breath-focused techniques to stay centered—not only under the pressure of competition, but in everyday life too.

From Feeling Breathless to Inner Freedom

Before discovering freediving, I often struggled with shallow breathing and stress symptoms. After long workdays, I felt breathless, yawning endlessly, and convinced I wasn’t getting enough oxygen. In reality, I was dealing with CO₂ imbalance—something I only understood later through studying physiology and science around breathing and freediving. Even before I had that knowledge, yoga and breath meditation helped me calm down, ground myself, and move from stress into inner freedom.

Breath as First Aid: Lowering Blood Pressure in Minutes

Just a few weeks ago, I witnessed meditation’s power in a real-life emergency. I accompanied a family member to the emergency department in Zurich. Her blood pressure was dangerously high—230/111—and the doctors were shocked. Originally, we had gone in for a foot injury, but when they measured her blood pressure, they insisted she could only leave if her upper value dropped to at least 165–170. I guided her through a gentle breath meditation—the same technique shown in the documentary. It’s important that such exercises never feel overwhelming, so I adjusted to an easy 5-second rhythm: inhale 5 seconds, hold 5 seconds, exhale 5 seconds. Breathing through the nose, into the belly. After just 15 minutes, her blood pressure had dropped enough for the doctors to release her.

Breaking Habits, Building Health

Many life-threatening symptoms like high blood pressure are rooted in unhealthy habits: smoking, drinking, lack of movement, but also more subtle factors like chronic stress, unresolved trauma, fatigue, or always putting others first. Medication can help manage the symptoms, but it can never stand alone. Real, lasting improvements come only through meaningful lifestyle changes. The challenge? Habits and addictions are powerful.

Once addictions and routines take over, it feels almost impossible to break free without help.

Many people feel ashamed to ask for help, believing they’re not strong enough. After years of living this way, we often forget what it feels like to have a body that isn’t constantly under stress.

High blood pressure is a perfect example: it silently damages the body and brain, eroding memory cells over time, and raising the risk of heart attack or stroke. In Switzerland, it affects almost one in three adults—proof of how urgent this issue is. That’s why I believe lifestyle changes—regular movement, mindful eating, good sleep, and conscious breathing—are not just “nice to have.” They are powerful medicine.
